History

The modern standing computer desk design was developed by Max Banfield of Modbury, South Australia, and published in the 10th edition of his book called The Posture Theory, under copyright with all rights reserved. 18 years after he published an essay called The Matter of Framework in the June 1980 edition of The Australasian Nurses Journal, pages 27-29, in which he concluded that the cause of undetectable illnesses in office workers was leaning toward the desk all day which compressed everything in the chest and abdomen. His next years of experiments added to the desk height with three to four platforms on top and various positions for the components of the top sections. It was reviewed with skepticism in the Autumn 2000 edition of The Skeptic magazine and later added to, and then deleted from Wikipedia as "just one guys theory" in 2007. Since then the design principles can be seen in what has become known as The US $6 billion/year Sit Stand Desk Revolution.

Are standing desks ergonomic?

The answer may surprise you!Does working at your standing desk make your lower back sore? Do you find your shoulders hunched forward out of mid-day fatigue? Do your feet ache by the end of the week? Did you start with a the desk, optimistic about the promised benefits of "productivity," "comfort," and "energy," but ultimately discover little or none of these things?

Ergonomics is the study of us humans and the tools we use to live and work. The goal being: to improve our comfort, health, safety, efficiency, productivity, energy, well-being… — every aspect of our workflow. Tools like the standing desk, anti-fatigue mats, footstools, curved keyboards, vertical mice, and monitor arms are all ergonomic tools that promise to unlock these benefits.

There are three ergonomic principles that relate to standing desk use;

Work in a comfortable (neutral) posture Beat fatigue Move, stretch, and take breaks

Benefits of standing desk

Spending more time of your day standing could reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. There is increasing evidence that, unless you are a wheelchair user, sitting down too much can be a risk to your health. Studies have linked being inactive with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and early death. To reduce our risk of ill health from inactivity, we are advised to reduce sitting time. Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat.

Flexible Workspace Solutions

Creating a happier, healthier elegant workspace, whether you’re working from home, back at the office, or doing a little of both, makes you work efficiently.

It’s not a silver bullet but space has an important role to play in our productivity and in how creative and innovative we’re able to be. It can also help our well-being. Think about the environment that allows you quiet space to concentrate or even to meditate (for the more enlightened amongst us), spacious and naturally lit collaboration areas for brain storming, and space to socialise and make a bite to eat. When your desk and the odd poorly lit meeting room are your only options, it limits you. Then a large work surface to provide ample room is a good choice.

Electric or Manual?

Electric desks allow for easy raising and lowering with the press of a button; some even have digital height readouts so you can always return your desk to the exact same sitting or standing height settings.Manual desks, which have pneumatic pedals, hand cranks or other manual controls, are lighter and quieter (because there's no heavy, noise-making motor mounted under your desk). Manual desks also don't require proximity to an outlet to work. So we can see that electric standing desks cost more than manual desks, so your budget will absolutely come into play here, but there's more to consider which is up to you. As we can know that adjustable desk is always the best choice!

The best standing desk can transform your home office or studio setup to make it a lot healthier for your posture. Sedentary lifestyles have been blamed for a lot of modern ailments, not least for causing back pain due to long hours sitting at a desk with poor posture. One way to spend less time sitting is to switch your chair and desk setup for a standing desk, or to at least spend part of your working hours standing rather than sitting.
